Venice Beach is a wide, south-facing beach backed by one of Southern California's most eclectic boardwalks. Calm summer conditions make it popular for swimming; low tide reveals a broad flat sand perfect for beach volleyball and walking.
The 4–5 ft Pacific tidal range is most noticeable at the water's edge: low tide reveals a broad, firm sand flat popular for volleyball and long walks, while high tide brings the water to within a few feet of the boardwalk bike path. Swimming is calmest at mid tide; modest shore break makes for decent bodyboarding at mid tide; fishing is done from the Venice Fishing Pier at any tide; shelling and tide pools are minimal on this open sandy coast. Local note: metered street parking fills quickly on weekends; the boardwalk is at its most lively on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
