South Beach is one of the most iconic urban beaches in the world, fronting the Art Deco historic district along the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic-facing shore gets a modest tidal range; high tide brings the water close to the lifeguard stands while low tide exposes a wide, firm sand flat.
Atlantic tidal range at South Beach is about 1.5–2 ft — subtle enough that conditions barely change between tides; the warm water (75–85°F) and wide sandy shore are accessible at any tide level. Swimming is comfortable year-round at any tide; there's minimal surf except after tropical systems; shelling is sparse on the groomed beach; fishing is done from the Government Cut jetty about a mile south, productive at any tide around current changes. Local note: paid city parking lots are spread throughout South Beach; the beach gets crowded from mid-morning onward; the quieter stretch north of 23rd Street has a more local feel.
