Santa Barbara East Beach is a long, palm-lined beach on a south-facing stretch of coast sheltered from the northwest swells by Point Conception. Calm conditions make it one of the most family-friendly swimming beaches on the California coast; low tide reveals smooth, walkable sand.
Protected from northwest swells by Point Conception, this beach has very gentle conditions; the 4–5 ft Pacific tidal range produces a wide sand flat at low tide ideal for volleyball and family play. Swimming is comfortable and calm at virtually any tide; there's no meaningful surf break here (Rincon, the world-class point break, is about 12 miles east); shore fishing near the harbor breakwater is done at any tide; shelling and tide pools are minimal. Local note: free parking along Cabrillo Blvd fills on weekends; Stearns Wharf and Leadbetter Beach are a short walk west; the beach volleyball courts are heavily used year-round.
