Po'ipū Beach

Po'ipū Beach on Kauai's sunny south shore is a sheltered double cove protected by a natural lava rock breakwater, making it one of Kauai's best family beaches. The calm inner cove is ideal for snorkeling and young swimmers; low tide exposes tide pools along the rocky margins.

Hawaii's small 1–2 ft tidal range keeps the inner cove consistently calm for swimming and snorkeling at any tide; low tide exposes additional tide-pool habitat along the rocky lava margins, where sea cucumbers, urchins, and small reef fish are common. Surfing at the outer break is possible but not beginner-friendly. Hawaiian monk seals frequently haul out to rest on the beach — they are protected and rangers maintain a 50 ft perimeter around any seal present. Local note: Brennecke's Beach directly adjacent to Po'ipū has strong shore break excellent for bodysurfing; Shipwreck Beach, a 10-minute walk east, has advanced surfing and dramatic sea-cliff scenery.
