Lanikai Beach on O'ahu's windward coast is a short, jewel-like stretch of powdery white sand with turquoise water protected by an offshore reef. The small tidal range and reef protection make conditions consistently calm and clear; low tide reveals a shallow sandy flat extending toward the Mokulua Islands.
Hawaii's 1–2 ft tidal range keeps conditions stable; low tide reveals a broad, very shallow sandy flat toward the two Mokulua Islands (Na Mokulua) offshore, making it the best time for snorkeling and wading out to explore. Swimming is excellent at any tide; the beach is too calm and shallow for surfing; kayaking to the Mokulua Islands is the signature activity, easiest at mid to low tide; shelling is minimal. Local note: there is no parking lot here — only street parking in the residential neighborhood, limited to about 30 spaces; arrive before 8 am on weekends; the sunrise from this east-facing beach is spectacular and draws photographers in the early morning hours.
