Ka'anapali Beach is a three-mile crescent of golden sand on Maui's west coast, lined with luxury resorts and offering excellent snorkeling at Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a). The sheltered position in the rain shadow of the West Maui Mountains keeps conditions calm; low tide reveals additional sandy areas around the reef.
Hawaii's small 1–2 ft tidal range keeps conditions consistently good; mid to low tide is the best window for snorkeling around Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a) at the north end, where the submerged lava reef is shallowest and fish most concentrated. Swimming is excellent in the calm, clear water at any tide; tide pool habitat at the base of Black Rock is accessible at low tide; shelling and surfing are minimal here. Local note: a ceremonial cliff dive from Black Rock at sunset is a Maui tradition performed by resort staff; despite the resort frontage, all Hawaii beaches are public — free access via the beach path from Whalers Village mall at the center of the beach.
