Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay on Kauai's north shore is a broad, two-mile crescent backed by lush green mountains and the Hanalei River, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Summer brings calm conditions ideal for swimming; winter brings large north swells that make the bay a world-class surfing destination.

Hawaii's small 1–2 ft tidal range means seasonal conditions, not tide, govern this bay: summer (May–September) brings flat, calm water excellent for swimming and stand-up paddleboarding at any tide; winter north swells (November–March) transform the bay into a world-class surfing destination where swimming is not advised. Shelling is minimal on the volcanic sand; the Hanalei River mouth and inner bay are popular for kayaking year-round; fishing from Hanalei Pier is a local tradition. Local note: the one-lane bridge on the road into Hanalei limits traffic flow; heavy rain can flood and temporarily close the road; parking near the pier fills quickly on clear summer mornings.
