South Padre Island is a 34-mile barrier island at the southern tip of Texas, offering warm Gulf waters and wide sandy beaches protected by Padre Island National Seashore to the north. Gulf tidal range is minimal; the shallow, warm water and gentle waves are consistent at nearly any tide level.
Gulf tidal range of less than 1 ft here; swimming, wading, and water activities are consistently accessible at any tide level in the warm, calm Gulf water. Surfing is not typically possible; shelling is modest at low tide; speckled trout, redfish, and pompano fishing is productive from the jetties and in the Laguna Madre Bay behind the island at any tide. Local note: Isla Blanca Park at the southern tip is a popular paid day-use area with camping and boat launch; the Laguna Madre behind the island is a major migratory birding area worth visiting; the area is a primary Spring Break destination in March–April.
