Galveston Beach

Galveston Island's 32-mile Gulf of Mexico coastline is the most accessible beach destination for the Houston metro area, offering wide, sandy beaches along the Seawall and Stewart Beach. Gulf tidal range is small; the gently sloping sandy bottom makes the water shallow and warm in summer.

Gulf tidal range of about 1.5 ft; the shallow, warm water (80°F+ in summer) is broadly consistent at any tide, though low tide gives a slightly wider wading zone. Swimming is comfortable at any tide, though visibility can be reduced by sediment — the brown-green water color is normal for this coast due to the Mississippi River sediment system and is not a water quality issue. Surfing is only possible during rare tropical system swells; fishing from Galveston Island Fishing Pier and the Seawall jetties is excellent for speckled trout, redfish, and flounder at any tide. Local note: Seawall Boulevard runs 10 miles — reportedly the world's longest continuous seawall sidewalk; the Historic Strand District (1890s commercial buildings) and Moody Mansion are worth a visit; beach access along the Seawall is free.
