Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach on Sarasota's barrier island is famous for its exceptionally fine, cool quartz sand that stays white even in the summer heat. Gulf of Mexico tidal range is minimal; nearly any tide level offers calm, shallow water well-suited to families and young swimmers.

Gulf tidal range at Siesta Key is less than 1 ft — the extraordinary quartz sand and calm, clear water are accessible and essentially unchanged at any tide level. Swimming is excellent at any tide; surfing is not possible in the calm Gulf water; shelling is modest on normal days but can yield finds after tropical storm winds; fishing is most productive by kayak in the Intracoastal and bay areas behind the island. Local note: the main beach parking lot fills before 10 am on summer weekends — arriving early or using the free trolley from nearby lots is strongly recommended; the quartz sand stays noticeably cool underfoot even in the afternoon sun.
