Carmel Beach

Carmel Beach is a crescent of brilliant white sand backed by Monterey cypress trees, set at the foot of Ocean Avenue in one of California's most charming coastal villages. Water is cold year-round; low tide is the best time for shoreline walks along the driftwood-strewn sand.

Cold water (50–55°F year-round) discourages most swimming; the 4–5 ft Pacific tidal range is most useful for tide-pool exploration at the rocky south end of the beach at low tide, where anemones and small crabs are visible. Modest wave action exists for experienced cold-water surfers; shelling yields some finds at low tide among the driftwood; shore fishing is done from the beach at any tide. Local note: dogs are welcome off-leash at any tide, making this one of the most dog-friendly beach destinations on the California coast; free village parking is a short walk up Ocean Avenue.
